The £1m Chamboree

Welcome to a short series of special editions focused on Chamboree 2018 to share with you information about the event.

On Wednesday evening of Chamboree we hosted a VIP reception for just over 100 guests including the Lord Lieutenant, David Briggs who were treated to a short tour of the site, canapés and a presentation by the County Commissioner. Graham took the opportunity to stress the importance of Scouting and Guiding on local communities across Cheshire and our combined impact of supporting a range of good causes.

He also revealed to the audience that Chamboree was a £1m scout camp when you add the Chamboree fees, the fees charged by groups for food/transport and the travel costs of representatives from 24 different Countries. It was pointed out that Chamboree is planned and delivered entirely by volunteers. It’s fair to say that everybody present was astonished!

Top Brass at Chamboree

Most people will know that Bear Grylls visited Chamboree on the Sunday but you might like to know that the top brass from both Scouting and Guiding were also visitors to Chamboree. Matt Hyde, CEO of UK Scouts joined us on Monday with his Cub Scout son and on Wednesday we were joined by Julie Bell, the new Deputy Chief Guide and Emma Guthrie the new Assistant Chief Guide.

Morrisons

The supermarket distribution depot in Winsford really helped with Chamboree. They supplied significant amounts of muscle to help build the site on our super Sunday build day and then came back to help us take it all down. They supplied sandwiches on the first Friday for staff building activity zones and supplied the fruits and juices for the Mocktail bar on the Explorer sub camp.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

VolkerRail is committed to supporting the communities within which it works and have donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to our Cheshire Scouts – County First Aid Unit at Chamboree.

Graham Phillips, County Commissioner and Camp Chief is pictured here with VolkerRail rail operative, Alex Warburton, who is also a member of the County First Aid Unit receiving our AED.

“VolkerRail fully appreciate just how important these devices are in saving lives and we were extremely happy to be able to help the group improve the service they can offer with this donation.”

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
