Other awards & badges

As a Young Person and Adult in Scouting there are various other awards and badges that can be gained which are outlined below

Joining-in Awards

The Joining In badges recognise a commitment to Scouting. They celebrate Young People participating in a Balanced Programme over a period of time.

These badges are not section specific. They recognise the length of time a young person has been a Member of the Scout Movement, rather than as a Member of any individual section.

Presenting the awards

The first would normally be presented one year after the young person has joined Scouting. The award acknowledges and celebrates an active involvement in a Balanced Programme. Some award a Joining In badge around the time of a Young Person’s birthday.

Wearing the badge

There is no requirement to remove the previous Joining In Badge when a new one is presented.

Tracking your progress

In Scouting your Leader will keep a track of your progress through your awards and is there to help you progress through them.

Partnership Awards

A further option to help your Balanced Programme are the three Partnership Awards:

• International Partnership Award
• Environment Partnership Award
• Faith Partnership Award

These awards encourage your Section to link up with another Section within your own Scout Group, a Section in another group, or another youth group or organisation, to work together on a project that will help other people.

A partner may be within Scouting, including Scout Network(s) or an appropriate external organisation. Examples would include:

• A Beaver Scout Colony, Cub Scout Pack, Scout Troop, Explorer Scout Unit and a Scout Network working together
• A Beaver Scout Colony, Cub Scout Pack and a Scout Troop working together
• A Scout Troop with a local British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) group
• Four Explorer Scout Units working together
• A Scout Network working with a local authority or Scout Active Support Unit.

Staged Activity Badges

The staged activity badges have been designed to provide a unified approach throughout the sections.

There are six activity badges staged across the sections, they are:

• Emergency Aid Staged Activity Badge
• Hikes Away Staged Activity Badge
• Information Technology Staged Activity Badge
• Musician Staged Activity Badge
• Nights Away Staged Activity Badge
• Swimmer Staged Activity Badge

This means that a young person can gain whichever badge is appropriate to the level they have reached. It is possible, for example, for a Beaver Scout who is an excellent swimmer to gain a higher level badge than a Scout who has just taken up the activity.

A young person should always wear only the highest of each staged badge type that they have gained on the uniform. For more information click here.

Adult Awards

The Scout Association has a national awards system for recognising good service, length of service and special acts of heroism and bravery, courage, endurance and devotion to duty under suffering.

Being a national system affords it status and allows all applications to be considered objectively according to national criteria. Except in the case of recognition of length of adult service, awards are not made automatically, and proper, detailed justification must be made in every case. For more information click here.
